(6.25 inches, 16 cm. tall), 528 pages. Includes indexes of churches and of artists/architects names. In Italian. Complete except for the missing engraved Title page. The volume starts with letter press title page. Cancelled label of academic library on the front pastedown. An early 18th century updated version of the first guide to art treasures and architecture of the churches and palaces of Rome, originally published in 1674. Abate Filippo Titi was an Italian Roman Catholic Protonotary apostolic, and an art historian, best known for his inventory of the artistic content of churches in Rome, titled Studio di Pittura scoltura et architettura nelle Chiese di Roma, published by Mancini in 1674 Biography Titi was born in town of Città di Castello in Umbria. He studied arts with Virgilio Ducci, a pupil of Francesco Albano. Titi's Studio was republished by Giuseppe Vannacci in 1686. It was then dedicated to Cardinal Gaspero di Carpegna, the papal Vicar. Titi's index lists about 275 churches. The sections include some of the background of the founding of the church, and the descriptions of the interior are curt; however, there is room for tart commentary such as when he states that to obtain the travertine used to build the Palazzo della Cancelleria nearly half of the Coloseum as well as the entire Arch of Emperor Gordian was undone.[2] His introduction highlights that this book was meant in part to serve as a guidebook to the increasing crowd of visitors that came to Rome as pilgrims or tourists on the Grand Tour. The book was republished over the years [3] A similar guide for Florence had been published nearly a century earlier by Francesco Bocchi. CONDITION: vellum covers have some soil, bumpiness and marginal wear but are essentially complete and in good shape. The interiors of the boards have some superficial tears, cancelled university library label, some writing on the endpapers. The Engraved Title page is missing and the letter press title page has light marginal wear. The first text page has an old repair of a marginal closed tear and a small stain at the lower corner. The text pages are complete, intact and clean except for 4 leaves at the beginning with a small light stain at the lower fore corner, not affecting the text. The binding is tight.
