"Don't we get dizzy when our fixed images of the world start to teeter?" This was the question recently posed by Art Magazine in a report on the Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. In his installations Eliasson addresses the physical laws and phenomena of the natural world. Water and light, air and color are among the basic elements in his works, which not only explore physical structures but also constitute experiments with models of human perception and our images of the environment. His artificially created 'natural' phenomena - rainbows, wind, waterfalls, reflections and spirals - are both aesthetically and intellectually fascinating and subtle. With his 'devices for perceiving reality' Eliasson very simply links reality, perceptions and represented reality. This publication presents Olafur Eliasson's most recent output - works that continue to throw our perceptive faculties off- balance. A searching essay and an interview with the artist illuminate Eliasson's artistic principles and explore his work in the context of art in Scandinavia today. The artist: Olafur Eliasson, born 1967 in Copenhagen. 1989-1995 he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Art, Copenhagen. Numerous exhibitions in galleries and museums worldwide, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Whitney Museum of Art, New York. In 1999 he participated in the Venice Biennale. Lives and works in Berlin.
