What is a city? Or even better: what can a city be? The new director of the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Ralf Beil, not only asked himself this question but also presented it to a circle of selected artists for the purpose of exploring the potential dissolution of Wolfsburg’s boundaries, its metamorphosis, and its reinterpretation. The catalogue assembles the results of this creative experiment, which is not only confined to museum space but uses the entire city as a source of inspiration for interventions. Major artists’ projects are being developed specifically for the exhibition, such as a total installation by Julian Rosefeldt, performances by John Bock, or photographs by Eva Leitolf and Peter Bialobrzeski. The expansive and multiform works reflect not only the history and the present but also the future of a city between industrialization, mobilization, and digitalization, between mass and individual, local and global action.
